Appoint Captain Tony DiLernia to the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council
Captain Tony DiLernia has been nominated by Governor Andrew Cuomo to serve on the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council. He deserves your support.
Please send the following letter to NOAA Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco urging her to appoint Tony to a seat representing New York on the Mid-Atlantic Council. He has thirty years experience representing New York’s fishing industry and his expertise is essential for the future of New York fisheries. Dear Dr. Lubchenco:
I am writing to support the appointment of Captain Anthony, (Tony), DiLernia to the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council.
Qualification for appointment includes experience in commercial or recreational fisheries or academic experience in fisheries issues. Captain DiLernia meets all three criteria. He is a member of the faculty and the Director of the Office of Maritime Technology at Kingsborough Community College. He has been a charter-boat captain since 1978 and is one of the founding members of the New York Seafood Council. He understands all of the fisheries aspects in the northeast and is able to represent the interests of fishermen, processors, retail outlets and consumers.
Captain DiLernia is particularly experienced in working with party and charter boats in the north-east and has been a reliable resource when asked to explain the complicated aspects of the various fishery management plans currently in affect. .
He was a effective representative of New York on the Mid-Atlantic Council from 1991 to 2002 and served as a member of the Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee from 2002 to 2009. From 2005 to 2008 he was Chairman of the Committee and supervised the writing of the report, Vision 2020: The Future of US Marine Fisheries. Recently he was nominated by Sport Fishing Magazine to receive the magazines’ prestigious “Making a Difference” award; an award that will be presented to only five individuals nationwide.
Our nation’s marine resources depends upon educated leaders building consensus and developing fishery management plans that serve the needs of our Nation and preserves stocks, for future generations through management, We need strong leadership to bring our fisheries into the twenty-first century. Captain DiLernia is such a leader; please appoint him to the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council.
